Pain Management

When was the last time you were pain free?

There are many types of pain there is pain that can be acute and that means it is of a recent onset then there is a chronic type of pain and that has been with you for some time.

Pain can be defined by Dorland's medical dictionary as "a more or less localized sensation of discomfort, distress, or agony, resulting from the stimulation of specialized nerve endings."

Why do I hurt so badly?

Pain is often associated with inflammation and is often thought of as the presence of disease. Chronic pain has never been defined medically, but rather as a symptom that something has gone wrong in the body. It can be an inflammatory response in body's tissue. And so far there have not been any blood tests developed for pain. But it is something that is very real to the individual and you will be very aware of it if you are the one with the pain. Medical science is still searching for some medication that does not have side effects for the patient to relieve pain.

I have been in practice for many years and I remember when some one had a pain that no one could define or figure out where it was coming from then the name rheumatism was a name given to the condition this is not a medical term but just a name that was used to describe a pain when no definite medical diagnosis could be made. Today it is called fibromyalgia. Regardless of whether a definitive cause of chronic pain can be found, every patient that has it is very aware of it and to them it is very real.
Some examples of inflammatory pain are:

  • Arthritis - Joints
  • Encephalitis - Brain
  • Gall Bladder Attack – Gall Bladder
  • Hepatitis - Liver
  • Bronchitis/Asthma - Lungs
  • Colitis - Colon
  • Gastritis - Stomach
  • Tendonitis – Muscle Tendons

Just to name a few.

I am going to list other types of pains that have been identified and you will be able to see from this list that there are many classifications of pain some are naturally created while still others seeming have no known cause.

Bearing down pain, boring pain, central pain, dilating pain, excentrip pain, expulsive pain, false pain, growing pains, heterotopic pain, menstrual pain, lancinating pain, lightning pains, phantom limb pain, referred pain, root pain, shooting pains, wandering pains and of course there are more but this gives us some idea of how big this problem can be.

Dr. John Liebeskind, a former president of the international pain foundation, observed a few years ago, " i don't think there is a medical school in the world where more than four hours out of four years are spent teaching students to diagnose and treat pain problems." now perhaps the reason is that there is really nothing much to treat it with medically. So pain is a real issue in all areas of health care.

We have talked about the fact that pain may be the hallmark of disease when actually it might just be a warning system for disease or injury kind of like a false alarm going off in your homes security system that is accidentally tripped. But in pain it just won't turn off. Pain has ruined millions of lives and people have spent billions of dollars in a quest to get some relief from pain.

We have another issue to deal with when pain is involved. The body produces its own painkillers in the form of endorphins and good eicosanoids which control pain vs. bad eicosanoids which cause pain. So at any given moment a person is both making good eicosanoids and pain free or bad eicosanoids and producing much pain in the body.
This most likely also may explain that ones mood, thoughts, emotions, anxiety, tensions, and muscle contractions affect the measure of the pain felt. For example, too much stress in ones lifestyle may and does increase pain sensations.

In almost all conditions of pain we find that it is closely related to a complex interaction of the mind and the body. So many things can influence its length of duration and intensity.
